May is a time for church anniversaries and conferences. The summer vacation period of late June until the end of August forbids local church special meetings, but in May the winter has ended and it is a merry month for coming together

I have been home from the USA for 6 weeks, and prepared and preached thirteen sermons, almost completed the series of 20 messages on the Holy Spirit that are going to be a lecture series in the new year at the Welsh Evangelical School of Theology in south Wales, over two hours from here.

It is the end of semester at the university and the students who drifted in last September have drifted home. I was offered no redundant goldfish as last year; the street is quieter and we have more room to park the car.

Two or three events in the last week have been helpful. The first was on Saturday, the graduation at the London Theological Seminary.

The New Year is gaining momentum. It is February already and there have been some sweet encouragements. A woman had Alzheimer’s for ten years and I visited her and her husband Jim each month.

It’s my 69th birthday today, or as I have been telling Iola, “I have entered my 70th year today,” or even, to spread it on thick, “Next year I shall enter my eighth decade.”

On Monday was the middle of the three Fairs held each November. This is the largest, the old ‘hiring fair’, when men and women stood at one side and farmers looking for labourers and milk-maids and servants walked up to them and interviewed them for a year’s employment.
